Step -1 Make a List of Keywords

One of the best ways to find the keywords your customers use is through Google Suggest. Start typing a keyword into Google's search bar, and it will show a list of suggestions. These suggestions are great for SEO because they come directly from Google, meaning people are actually searching for them. Longer keywords, called "long tail keywords," are usually less competitive than shorter ones. So, even though long tail keywords have lower search volumes, they are easier to rank for. I suggest typing several keywords into Google until you have about 10 keywords on your list. To check the search volume and competition for these keywords, you can use tools like Semrush or Ubersuggest. By these steps, you can develop a successful SEO strategy and find the best keywords for your content.

Step 2: Analyze Google’s First Page

Once you have some keywords, see who ranks for them. Type one of your keywords into Google and check the first page results. If most results are list posts, you should create a list post for your blog. This shows you what content works best for your keywords.

By understanding this, you can improve your chances of ranking higher. This step is key to building a successful SEO strategy, ensuring your content meets what people are searching for.

Step 3: Identify Your Competitors

My favorite tool for SEO competitor analysis is Semrush. It simplifies the process and saves a lot of time. To start, click on "Domain Overview". Scroll down to find the "Main Organic Competitors" section. This section lists websites that rank for similar keywords and target similar audiences. Click on the “View all…” button to see a complete list of your competitors and gain more insights. The “Common Keywords” section shows the total number of keywords you share with each site. Websites with a high number of shared keywords are your main competitors.

By the end of this step, you should have identified at least 4-5 main organic competitors. Using Semrush in this way is key to developing a successful SEO strategy. It helps you understand your competition and target the right keywords to improve your ranking.

Step 4: Create Something Unique or Better

Now it's time to create high-quality content for your successful SEO strategy. When making SEO content, you have two choices:

Option #1: Create something different.

Option #2: Create something better.

Sometimes, you should make something bigger and better than what's already out there. Other times, it's best to create something entirely different to make your content stand out.

For example, I once wrote content optimized for "Mobile SEO." I saw that Google's first page was filled with list posts like "X Ways to Mobile Optimize Your Site."

I could have made a bigger list like "150 Ways to Mobile Optimize Your Site," but that didn't seem right. Instead, I created something entirely different: an ultimate guide to mobile optimization. By doing this, my content stood out from the rest and offered something unique to my audience. This approach can help you develop a successful SEO strategy by making your content more appealing and valuable to your readers.

Step  5: Add a Hook

Start by understanding why people link to certain content in your industry. This is often called "The Hook." Once you identify what makes content link-worthy, include that "Hook" in your own content.

For example, I noticed that many bloggers were writing about voice search. To leverage this, I created content focused on optimizing for voice search, making it valuable and relevant.

By finding and using effective hooks, you can improve your content and increase your chances of earning backlinks, which is key to a successful SEO strategy.
